Schoolboy Owen Jefferies of Belhus spun his team into contention in this Essex Sunday League (East Division) fixture at Southchurch Park with a rewarding 4-34 from eight excellent overs. Ultimately, it was the home side who emerged with maximum points as Belhus fell just 16 runs short with 13 balls remaining. No batsman in either side managed to record a half-century, though there were some good knocks from several. For the Old Boys, the main run scorers were Green, 38, Lucas, 20, Johnston, 34, Guy, 28, and Mbili 33. Eight home batsmen were caught, with the remaining wicket falling to a Chris Baker stumping. After tea, Belhus had their top four batsmen in the runs through Gavin Jefferies 38, Billy Winter 30, Baker 48 and Stuart Morris 25. The middle-late order contributed little, with the exception of Graham Davidge who hit a fine 23, with all his runs coming in boundaries except for one single. For Southendians, Hunt took 5-40 from seven overs while Lucas finished on 3-37.
