Southend-on-Sea v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 13.00
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 143 runs
Match report
Belhus travelled to Southend on 20 June sniffing the sea air and the sweet smell of a win. The fixture against bottom-of-the-league Southend-on-Sea was earmarked as a must-win game by skipper Thompson, a task his team registered and completed without falter.
Put into bat on a hard-looking deck, Thompson mused on his way out to the middle that it was, indeed, a good toss to lose. Sea-side cricket folk law dictates that when the tide is in, the ball will swing. The observant members of the Belhus convoy noted that the estuary couldn’t have looked more swollen and thus, the leather did hoop.
Seeing off the new ball produced few dramas for openers Thompson and Sansom, while at 38 from 12 overs for no loss, the pair were content with the stand. Thompson fell to the first ball from the first change bowler: a sharp in-ducker – at contrast to the away-shape previously served up.
After a slow start, Sansom moved to 50 without drama, ably aided by Baker and Banner, who both fell after making a start. Thompson brought the innings to a close in the 48th over, once Sansom had completed a fine ton without offering a chance.
Baker led the Belhus attack with aplomb. After a week’s absence, he hurtled into the crease offering a display of fine aggressive bowling, dislodging the opening batsman and number five.
Another fine display of flight and guile from young leg spinner Jeffries brought him three well-deserved wickets with five consecutive maidens at an incredible economy rate of 0.7. Well supported in the field by his team, some outstanding ground work from Kenyon brought about a run out of Southend’s most dangerous batsman, Ahmed, along with a couple of fine catches at short midwicket.
The result never looked in doubt as the bowlers stuck to their task and enjoyed reward at regular intervals. Randall bowling his cheeky off cutters took the last wicket to draw the innings to a close at 90 all out.
