Match report Again Belhus lost the toss and were asked to field. The day began well when Mike Cansdale ran out the Benfleet captain for 5. His opening partner seemed to be affected by the run out and never seemed comfortable at the crease. Wright scored freely but was caught & bowled by James Terry low down, straight and hard. Gipson came in and looked solid in defence but never put pressure on the bowlers. Jenkins was eventually stumped, trying to break the shackles that the bowlers had put on him. Runs were still coming at a slow rate and wickets were being lost until Steed joined Gipson in the middle with 6 down. These two steered the innings through to the end taking the Belhus bowlers for 80 runs in the last 10 overs and the total to a competitive 214. Mike Cansdale ended with figures of 3 for 42 from 17 overs and perhaps if another spinning option had been available the total would have been smaller.
The Belhus reply began identically to Benfleet as far as runs being hard to come by. The main difference was after 34 had been scored 4 wickets had been lost. Roy Heffernan at number 4 and captain on the day started to do for Belhus what Gipson had done for Benfleet and looked solid. Billy Winter gave good support and these 2 were still in when the last 20 overs were called. A victory was now looking possible after such a poor start. However Winter was bowled shortly after for 34 and then Belhus lost 2 more quick wickets. Kevin Harber came in at number 9 and gave Heffernan the support he had when Winter was batting with him but it was too little too late and the innings finished on 179 for 7 with Harber again not out on 22 and Heffernan 76 not out.
