Benfleet edged home by just one wicket in this thrilling Essex Sunday League East division encounter at Woodside Park on Sunday. The home side's father and son final wicket partnership of Ron and Gareth Steed saw Benfleet edge home as Gareth finished on 28 not out. Steed senior may only have scored one run, but his invincibility at the crease was priceless. The visitors had earlier turned to spin, with Michael Cansdale and Owen Jefferies ripping the heart out of the host's middle order. Cansdale finished with 4-27 and Jefferies 2-32, both from eight overs. Gavin Jefferies took 2-15 from four overs, one of which was a maiden, while Rikki Ellis claimed 1-30 from seven overs (also one maiden). Opening batsman Zammit top scored for Benfleet with a fine 37. For Belhus, Billy Winter hit 23, Chris Baker top scored with 33, while Cansdale was unbeaten with 29. Ron Steed bagged 3-24 from eight overs, one maiden, for Benfleet, while Pritchard took 2-29, Bassett and Gareth Steed took a wicket apiece.
