On what was a glorious day in the sun, Belhus 3rd XI came out on top in what was a remarkable record run chase for a Belhus 3rd XI side.
Winning the toss and deciding to bowl seemed a good ploy at first, Alan Maidment taking 3 early wickets to leave Hornchurch 69-3. Enter Tony Willison, hitting the ball to all corners in a blistering 127 off 164 balls to leave Belhus reeling, superbly supported by a fine 70 from Mike Sullivan. Belhus went into tea licking their wounds, but not downhearted.
The run chase started off well, Stuart Morris and Brian Edwards setting a good foundation until Morris drove straight into the hands of cover for 14. Edwards continued to assualt the opening bowlers in a quick and handy 25 until he was bowled. With the 258 target looking more and more unlikely, John Forrest stroked a masterly 46, supported first by Jim Robertson and then Lee Webber. When Forrest departed, more wickets followed and Belhus were 193-7. Skipper Paul Whitlock came to the crease, and possibly where other captains would have batted out for a draw at this stage with less than 10 overs to go, it was never in his mind and struck a nail through Hornchurch hearts with 32 not out off 30 balls to strike up a 65 run partnership with Lee Webber, himself an excellent 55 not out, to see Belhus home and claim a well earned team victory.
