Belhus stormed through to the second round of the Shepherd Neame League Cup after an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Ongar at North Stifford on Saturday. Belhus opener Gavin Jefferies led the way with a fine undefeated 59 after an equally impressive bowling display from the home side. The opening attack of Dale Kenyon and Jonathan Gordon yielded 2-16 and 2-25 from six overs respectively as the first four Ongar batsmen all failed to reach double figures. With first change bowler Connor Day picking up two wickets for 31 runs from six overs, Rob Joyce and Billy Winter mopped up with one wicket each. Two run-outs from Richard Day enduced an early tea as Ongar were dismissed after just 29.5 overs, despite the best efforts of Asfak Patel who top scored in the innings with 28.

In the post-tea session, Joe Joyce supported Jefferies with a crafted 41 not out, while Martin Guilbert contributed 19 runs. Belhus welcomed back Wayne Read from Orsett, the new Belhus captain will be looking forward to scoring runs this season after an unfortunate start, having been dismissed by the very first ball he received. For Ongar, Michael Hayward picked up two wickets at a cost of 38 runs.
