1999 Highlights 1999
..........................................................................................................................................
1999 was not a season that witnessed many memorable matches but there were some fine individual performances and a few broken records along the way. Wayne Read had an excellent season. Scoring 1677 runs at an average of 45.32 (including 3 x centuries and 10 x 50s) he clearly didn't let his responsibilities as 1st XI Captain affect his own performance. The bowlers had a particularly good year, with Steve Liddiard (45 wickets), Scott Bayford (42), David Stone (35), Robert Waters (34), Francis Baptiste (34) and Keith Hall (32) all performing well. But it was Jim Robertson who topped the bill with a total of 60 wickets at an average of 18.18.
The highlight of the season was the brilliant unbroken 9th wicket partnership of 162 between Francis Baptiste and Richard Dopson against Havering-atte-Bower CC on 4th September - a fantastic record that will surely remain for very many years.

The following is a selection of some of the more interesting matches of '99. Unfortunately the 2nd XI scorebook cannot be found and if anyone knows of its whereabouts, would they please contact Denis Reed so that this page might be updated.

Jim's 8 for 41
On 22nd May, Dagenham had no answer to Jim Robertson who returned the season's best figures of 8 for 41. Chasing a target of just 165, the 1st XI knocked them off pretty quickly, although they lost 5 wickets in the process, with Wayne Read masterminding Dagenham's downfall with 85 not out.
Close At Horton Kirby
The 1st XI put 229 for 7 on the board on 31st May with openers Richard Wakely (51) and Terry Lambert Jnr (80) sharing a partnership of 123. Horton Kirby made a good attempt at their target but fell short by just 10 runs thanks to Mark Winter who took 6 for 44.
Brian Wins In Style
Founded in 1773, Meopham CC in Kent is one of the oldest clubs in the country. Batting first, Meopham rattled up 229 without our 1st XI bowlers making any impact. After losing 3 batsman to lbw decisions, Brian Edwards took the game into his own hands and stroked a casual 106 not out, hitting the winning runs with a 6.

Big Hitting In Thurrock KO Cup
Pegasus & Corringham clocked up one of the highest ever totals in the history of the Thurrock and District Knock-Out Cup on 19th July when they climbed to 181 from their 16 x 8 ball overs. Of course we had no option but to put bat to ball, and we suprised many by reaching the required target with 2 balls to spare. In addition to 67 not out from Wayne Read, 'extras' provided us with 34 runs - another record in the KO Cup perhaps?
Steve Liddiard 7 for 23
On 26th June, Ilford Catholics could only manage 64 against a superb spell by Steve Liddiard who took 7 for 23. We knocked off the runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
Wayne's 100 - But On Losing Side
The 1st XI made a respectable 229 for 3 from 35 overs against Old Colfeians on 25th July with Jim Banner (73 not out) and Wayne Read (100) sharing a 2nd wicket partnership of 153. Unhappily, our bowling attack could not prevent Old Colfeians reaching the target for the loss of just 6 wickets.

Wayne Read
Wayne's 116 - On the Losing Side Again!
This 40 over mid-week game against Goresbrook on 4th August at North Stifford produced two fine innings. First, Wayne Read scored 116 not out batting at No.5 and we reached 241 for 7. Second, J Ivory masterminded the Goresbrook run-chase to perfection with a crafted 153 to see the vistors home with 4 balls remaining.
Steve Takes Another 7
In the league match against on 14th August, Steve Liddiard was again on form and ripped through the Snaresbrook batting to finish with 7 for 51. We lost 5 wickets in chasing down the required 117.
Impressive Double Over Havering-atte-Bower
The two league games against Havering on 4th September resulted in impressive wins for both our 1st and 2nd XIs. At North Stifford against our 1st XI, Havering racked up 228 for 6 from 54 overs. But with an opening partnership of 170 between Martin Guilbert (60) and Wayne Read (116) we eased home to victory after 40 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets.
The 2nd XI were looking down the barrel when they found themselves at 113 for 8. But then Francis Baptiste (70 not out) and Richard Dopson (84 not out including 6 sixes and the club record score for a No. 10 batsman), batting at Nos. 9 and 10 respectively, got together to post one of the club's greatest partnerships of 162 for the 9th wicket (a club record and one that will surely remain unbeaten for some considerable time) to take our total to 275 for 8. A shell-shocked Havering managed to clock up 170 for 7 and were relieved to hold on for a draw.
Ten Wickets Win
Paul Stone took 5 for 37 from his 17 overs to enable us to dismiss Woodford Green for 156 on 11th September. Carrying on from where they left off the previous week, openers Martin Guilbert (72 not out) and Wayne Read (78 not out) saw the 1st XI home to an impressive 10 wickets win.
